You can never go wrong with a marathon set from Sasha and Diggers – these two will take you places you never thought imaginable. The key with their brand of progressive is patience – they build the anticipation and the beat over hours, with seamless mixes, intricate layers, and ingenious programming. They use every minute of their set to build momentum meticulously, whipping loyal proggers into a frenzy by the end. If you plan on checking this one out, plan on staying for the long haul – the payoff will be worth it! James Zabiela, Sasha's hand-picked lackey and Bedroom Bedlam winner, has made quite a name for himself with his unique blend of chunky prog, tech-house, breaks - you name it, he plays it.

Ultra Music Festival @ Bayfront Park

After you pick your jaw up off the floor after looking at the lineup for Ultra each year, you have to smack yourself back to reality – short sets, conflicting set times, and tens of thousands of teenage candy kids often make Ultra the event to avoid for most. Besides, you can catch every DJ at a more intimate event elsewhere in South Beach . But looking at the lineup again makes it hard to avoid.

Playstation 2 Dual Play @ House of Blues

This party has decent talent, but is as homogenized as they come at the Conference. BBB is always a treat to watch, but Ferry Corsten and Dieselboy are as mainstream as they come as far as trance and drum n' bass are concerned. Besides, the Dual Play parties have been at every major House of Blues across the country in the last year – but, not bad for twenty bucks.

Axis Records @ B.E.D.

Jeff Mills is easily the most heralded and respected DJs from Detroit 's second generation of techno. The home base of his Axis label is Chicago – Underground Resistance, the collective he made famous, is rooted in Detroit . Yet Mills has chosen to stay away from the US scene for years now - save for a few random one-offs at Arc in NYC, and a headlining set at the 2003 Movement Festival in Detroit, The Wizard has distanced himself from the stateside techno scene for years. In the meantime, he has become nothing short of an icon in Europe and Asia, from his thundering Liquid Room sets in Tokyo , to headlining Homelands, Sonar, I Love Techno, Mayday – and on and on. Some of his detractors will argue that the lack of support from homegrown artists like Mills is the reason why the techno scene in the US can't get past second-rate rooms with no more than a handful of chinscratchers, outside of Detroit and New York . But as Alan Oldham aka T-1000 has said: “…it's hardly a treat to play for nothing to a smattering of surly, indifferent people, some of whom will probably get on a message board the next day and rip you apart. Then the very next week, you're off to Switzerland for a party that slams, start to finish. Happy people, good music, beautiful women. Which would you choose?” Who can argue with that? Well, the past couple years has seen a solid foundation being built within the US techno community – promoting teams such as Tronic in NYC and Koncept in Chicago have started to lure the global jocks over to the States, and the Angry Techno Mob is growing all over the country, from Miami to LA. Now, Mills is about to make his presence in the US loud and clear, with a series of sets for Spundae in both Chicago and LA in March. And what a better way to make some noise in the US than to throw a party at BED during the Conference! Now the Axis Records party at BED w/ the Wizard has become the most talked-about event of the week. Three decks, a 909, and 70 records an hour - this is destined to become a party of legendary proportions. With the hype going into this one, and the mad respect Mills gets from the electronic community, you're going to have to polish more than your shoes to gain access to this event!

Richie Hawtin's M_Nus label is fast becoming the home of the best in stateside minimal techno – leave it to Plastikman to continue pushing the envelope in electronic music, as he has for fifteen years. Like Richie said: “ If there's a kind of lifeblood that runs through the music and the scene that I'm involved with, it's that tie between technology and progressiveness. I don't want to stop progressing in my mind, my heart and my music, and I think that's part of the whole techno ethos. ” Just when every techno jock has entered the pissing contest to see who could beat it harder, darker, and longer, Richie flips the script and brings things back the minimal route, releasing the first Plastikman album in seven years, full of subtle layers and dark, intricate textures. His label, and his party at Privilege, now reads like a who's-who of the Detroit minimal scene – in the main room with the man himself will be Magda, his hand-picked opener for his Control parties and most of his club gigs – Magda is the reigning queen of glitchy minimal, and recently warmed LaLaLand up to the minimal sound at the Cued-Up monthly Mixture. Working the terrace will be Clark Warner and Matthew Dear, who's album “Leave Luck to Heaven” has made everyone's best-of 2K3 list – Dear also recently visited LA courtesy of DroidBehavior – and thrown in for good measure is John Acquaviva, Hawtin's partner on Plus 8 Records – expect bleeps and loops, Final Scratch abound, and a dedicated base of hard core Hawtin fanatics at Privilege. Last year Richie rocked it at BED; this year he opens it up to the Angry Techno Mob at the first techno-focused venue in South Beach , Privilege – no plastic peeps here folks, just PLASTIKMAN!!!!

The absolute finest in Chicago house, together under one roof! Derrick Carter – enough said. The living legend, in one of only two WMC appearances. Hope his shoulder's doing OK! We missed him on his West Coast swing, due to a slip and fall on the ice. Joining him will be the legendary Lego – his Boom Boom Room Mondays at Red Dog make him a true Chicago house legend. Chicago mainstay Chris Gin – the Custom One has worked every historic room in the birthplace of house – from the Warehouse to Crobar, and everywhere inbetween, Gin's passion is only eclipsed by his endless talent! Gene Farris was just in SD at Bar Dynamite, and the Sinister Minister never disappoints! Collette from SuperJane relocated to LA, but brought her blissful vocals with her as always – she rocked On Broadway a couple months back. New York 's Danny Tenaglia is truly one of house music's maestros. His list of production credits is endless, his residencies are always the premiere events in New York, and the man stays loyal to the city that loves him most – his ironically-named “Be Yourself” Fridays at Arc (“Be Yourself – as long as you adhere to this laundry list of rules”) is still going strong, when he does decide to get off his soapbox on Dtourism to actually play some records. But as much as you might dislike his pompous, narcissistic attitude, you can't deny the man's profound influence or talent. His marathon sets at Space at the Conference the last few years have been THE event – SIXTEEN HOURS of the choicest cuts ranging from tribal to techno to classic NY house and even filtered disco – no one's crate is as deep as DT's, and I mean no ones. This year Danny has opted not to throw the biggest party of the WMC, and has scaled down his presence with several smaller events, highlighted by this two-night birthday bash at Envy. Plus with DJ Vibe and Chus & Ceballos in the mix, this is a guaranteed night of the best music of the week. Good luck getting in!!!

Or Christian Smith and Ben Sims spinning on a boat in the middle of Lower Manhattan in the middle of the summer?
