Miami’s annual Winter Music Conference – where the electronic music world’s year begins, and ends. Every March, virtually every DJ, producer, promoter, record label and publication in EDM represents themselves to the global electronic community with a week-long celebration in every usable venue in magnificent South Beach, making for one of the most hedonistic, energy-filled, and talent-bursting events in the world. The WMC is where you’ll first hear the tracks that will own Ibiza all summer, and every dancefloor inbetween – where you’ll see the year’s hottest new talent make a name for themselves – and where you get to bear witness and rub elbows with planet Earth’s most transcendental and groundbreaking electronic artists. From the daytime poolside house events to the jam-packed all-night club throwdowns, the WMC is where legends are made, stories unfold, and inhibitions are lost every minute of the sun-soaked day and all through the sweat-soaked night.

After you pick your jaw up off the floor after looking at the lineup for Ultra each year, you have to smack yourself back to reality – short sets, conflicting set times, and tens of thousands of teenage candy kids often make Ultra the event to avoid for most. Besides, you can catch every DJ at a more intimate event elsewhere in South Beach . But looking at the lineup again makes it hard to avoid.

Playstation 2 Dual Play @ House of Blues

Location: Opium Garden , 136 Collins Ave.
Time: 10pm - 5am
Price: $20. Advanced tickets available at www.wanttickets.com

This party has decent talent, but is as homogenized as they come at the Conference. BBB is always a treat to watch, but Ferry Corsten and Dieselboy are as mainstream as they come as far as trance and drum n' bass are concerned. Besides, the Dual Play parties have been at every major House of Blues across the country in the last year – but, not bad for twenty bucks.

Axis Records @ B.E.D.

Presented by: Made at Arc and Axis Records

DJs/Performers: Jeff Mills

Location: B.E.D., 929 Washington Ave.
Time: 11pm - 5am
Price: Invitation Only

Jeff Mills is easily the most heralded and respected DJs from Detroit 's second generation of techno. The home base of his Axis label is Chicago – Underground Resistance, the collective he made famous, is rooted in Detroit . Yet Mills has chosen to stay away from the US scene for years now - save for a few random one-offs at Arc in NYC, and a headlining set at the 2003 Movement Festival in Detroit, The Wizard has distanced himself from the stateside techno scene for years. In the meantime, he has become nothing short of an icon in Europe and Asia, from his thundering Liquid Room sets in Tokyo , to headlining Homelands, Sonar, I Love Techno, Mayday – and on and on. Some of his detractors will argue that the lack of support from homegrown artists like Mills is the reason why the techno scene in the US can't get past second-rate rooms with no more than a handful of chinscratchers, outside of Detroit and New York . But as Alan Oldham aka T-1000 has said: “…it's hardly a treat to play for nothing to a smattering of surly, indifferent people, some of whom will probably get on a message board the next day and rip you apart. Then the very next week, you're off to Switzerland for a party that slams, start to finish. Happy people, good music, beautiful women. Which would you choose?” Who can argue with that? Well, the past couple years has seen a solid foundation being built within the US techno community – promoting teams such as Tronic in NYC and Koncept in Chicago have started to lure the global jocks over to the States, and the Angry Techno Mob is growing all over the country, from Miami to LA. Now, Mills is about to make his presence in the US loud and clear, with a series of sets for Spundae in both Chicago and LA in March. And what a better way to make some noise in the US than to throw a party at BED during the Conference! Now the Axis Records party at BED w/ the Wizard has become the most talked-about event of the week. Three decks, a 909, and 70 records an hour - this is destined to become a party of legendary proportions. With the hype going into this one, and the mad respect Mills gets from the electronic community, you're going to have to polish more than your shoes to gain access to this event!

M_Nus @ Privilege

Presented by: M_Nus Records

DJs/Performers: Main Room - Richie Hawtin & Magda. Second Room - John Acquaviva & DJ Minx. Terrace - Clark Warner & Matthew Dear.

Location: Privilege Club, 637 Washington Ave.
Time: Sunday 3/7, 10pm - 5am
Price: $25 advance tickets available now at www.groovetickets.com

Details: Ages: 21+, Phone: 305.695.9909

Richie Hawtin's M_Nus label is fast becoming the home of the best in stateside minimal techno – leave it to Plastikman to continue pushing the envelope in electronic music, as he has for fifteen years. Like Richie said: “ If there's a kind of lifeblood that runs through the music and the scene that I'm involved with, it's that tie between technology and progressiveness. I don't want to stop progressing in my mind, my heart and my music, and I think that's part of the whole techno ethos. ” Just when every techno jock has entered the pissing contest to see who could beat it harder, darker, and longer, Richie flips the script and brings things back the minimal route, releasing the first Plastikman album in seven years, full of subtle layers and dark, intricate textures. His label, and his party at Privilege, now reads like a who's-who of the Detroit minimal scene – in the main room with the man himself will be Magda, his hand-picked opener for his Control parties and most of his club gigs – Magda is the reigning queen of glitchy minimal, and recently warmed LaLaLand up to the minimal sound at the Cued-Up monthly Mixture. Working the terrace will be Clark Warner and Matthew Dear, who's album “Leave Luck to Heaven” has made everyone's best-of 2K3 list – Dear also recently visited LA courtesy of DroidBehavior – and thrown in for good measure is John Acquaviva, Hawtin's partner on Plus 8 Records – expect bleeps and loops, Final Scratch abound, and a dedicated base of hard core Hawtin fanatics at Privilege. Last year Richie rocked it at BED; this year he opens it up to the Angry Techno Mob at the first techno-focused venue in South Beach , Privilege – no plastic peeps here folks, just PLASTIKMAN!!!!

Your House or Mine @ Mirage

Presented by: X'ess Entertainment in association with Localsound Chicago

DJs/Performers: Derrick Carter, Yousef, Jazzy Jeff, Collette, James Curd, Frank Solano, Chris Santiago, Jon Huang, Chris Gin, Gene Farris , Diz, Miss Honey Dijon, Lego, and Marc Vane.

Location: Mirage, 671 Washington Ave.
Time: 10pm - ???
Price: $20 / $10 early / $30-no line pass

The absolute finest in Chicago house, together under one roof! Derrick Carter – enough said. The living legend, in one of only two WMC appearances. Hope his shoulder's doing OK! We missed him on his West Coast swing, due to a slip and fall on the ice. Joining him will be the legendary Lego – his Boom Boom Room Mondays at Red Dog make him a true Chicago house legend. Chicago mainstay Chris Gin – the Custom One has worked every historic room in the birthplace of house – from the Warehouse to Crobar, and everywhere inbetween, Gin's passion is only eclipsed by his endless talent! Gene Farris was just in SD at Bar Dynamite, and the Sinister Minister never disappoints! Collette from SuperJane relocated to LA, but brought her blissful vocals with her as always – she rocked On Broadway a couple months back. This party will be three rooms of the best Chicago has to offer – a must for real headz!!

In seven years, Erick Morillo has established his Subliminal Records as the premiere stateside house label, spreading through various genres – “Sondos, catering to a darker sound; Subliminal Soul, which offers soulful deep house, Subusa, a unique blend of 80's electro house…What Goes Around, and Harry Romero's label, Bambossa.” Then of course there's Morillo's own Subliminal Sessions, which offer a taste of Morillo's rockin' sets from around the globe. His Subliminal nights have spread from NYC to Ibiza, Madrid, Ireland, and the UK – there's no doubt that Morillo's resounding success is a direct result of his non-stop work ethic – but it doesn't hurt to have a crew of talent as deep as he does backing you up. Harry Romero masterfully produces house with Arabic, Latin, and Italian soundscapes, and his Bambossa label has already knocked out some Ibiza faves like “So Lonely” and “Night at the Black.” Melvin Moore is nothing short of a New York legend, having rocked every room in the city with his unique style of house – Melvin can melt deep vocal garage right into slammin' tech-house with ease, and his Back to Bassixs weekly rivaled only DT's Be Yourself around the turn of the millennium. Then, of course, you have Who Da Funk, of “Shiny Disco Balls” fame – “What do you get when you marry industrial rock with house, crunchy guitars with repetitive beats, filtered disco with Bowie-esque space-pop? And just who would be adventurous enough to try and find out? It's a question with one for an answer: Who Da Funk?” And then of course, you have the man himself – Erick Morillo – from Ministry of Sound in London to Pacha in Ibiza , from Spundae Chicago to LA, Morillo packs clubs and rocks bodies with his special blend of chunky, funk-filled house. He's been known to rock sets with 4 CDJ turntables and a live vocalist, allowing him to create new music live and on the fly – not your standard 1s and 2s affair by any means. His Subliminal parties are always a first-class event, and Crobar is always the welcome home of the famed WMC Subliminal Sessions.

Danny Tenaglia's Birthday Bonanza @ Club Envy

DJs/Performers: Danny Tenaglia, Tony Thomas, Demi, Chus & Ceballos, DJ Vibe

Location: Club Envy, 90 NE 11th St. , Downtown Miami
Time: ???
Contact: 305-373-2229

New York 's Danny Tenaglia is truly one of house music's maestros. His list of production credits is endless, his residencies are always the premiere events in New York, and the man stays loyal to the city that loves him most – his ironically-named “Be Yourself” Fridays at Arc (“Be Yourself – as long as you adhere to this laundry list of rules”) is still going strong, when he does decide to get off his soapbox on Dtourism to actually play some records. But as much as you might dislike his pompous, narcissistic attitude, you can't deny the man's profound influence or talent. His marathon sets at Space at the Conference the last few years have been THE event – SIXTEEN HOURS of the choicest cuts ranging from tribal to techno to classic NY house and even filtered disco – no one's crate is as deep as DT's, and I mean no ones. This year Danny has opted not to throw the biggest party of the WMC, and has scaled down his presence with several smaller events, highlighted by this two-night birthday bash at Envy. Plus with DJ Vibe and Chus & Ceballos in the mix, this is a guaranteed night of the best music of the week. Good luck getting in!!!

Presented by: Made

DJs/Performers: Danny Howells

Location: B.E.D., 929 Washington Ave.
Time: Monday 3/8, 10pm - 5am
Price: Invitation only

Danny Howell’s BED parties quickly became a thing of legend after the first installment in 2K2 – last year Howells kept it rocking til 7AM, and even saw P.Diddy show up to sing “Let’s Get Ill” – hopefully that was just a one-off! Danny has become known for his marathon sets – nothing like a sixteen-hour DT affair, but 8-10 hours of escalating sonic anticipation perfectly constructed by Howells is an aural overload. He is versatile and patient, which makes for an incredible night of eclectic, one-of-a-kind programming. He builds the night perfectly, starting with some sexy progressive that gradually crescendos into pounding tech-house in the wee hours – without question, the line is going to be around the block, all night long. If you’re lucky enough to get an invite to this year’s event, be sure and arrive in time for dinner, and don’t plan on leaving until breakfast!

Every single head in the United States who considers themselves a fan of techno should personally thank Viktor and the guys at Tronic for what they’ve done and continue to do for the stateside techno scene - because without them, we wouldn’t have access to so many of the incredible jocks that Tronic brings to New York, and beyond. Who else would have Marco Carola and Adam Beyer doing a 2x4 set at 6AM on a Monday morning at DEMF 2002? Or Christian Smith and Ben Sims spinning on a boat in the middle of Lower Manhattan in the middle of the summer? Tronic’s presence in the US techno community is undeniable and invaluable – this year’s party at Privilege promises to be multiple hours of the globe’s best talent, all assembled under one roof. T-1000, Marco Bailey, Christian Varela, John Selway, and on and on - most making their exclusive WMC appearances - what else needs to be said? Even Bill Patrick and Dennis Rodgers of the 112 Crew are going to be throwing down. Last year’s event was slightly diluted due to a last-minute rescheduling which forced Tronic to team up with house promoter Long Night Out, which left a bit to be desired if you’re a true chin-scratching techno snob – this year, expect 10+ hours of straight skull-fuckings.

Masters at Work – the upper echelon of the legendary New York house music community. The only thing that eclipses their influence on the historic NYC club scene is their seemingly endless body of production work. From their early days being turned on to the genius of Larry Levan at the Paradise Garage, to their run through historic venues like Sound Factory, Little Louie Vega and Kenny Dope Gonzalez are revered the world over, and their impact on music in general is seemingly never-ending. “Vega and Gonzalez defiantly mix everything they can find – house, hip-hop, funk, disco, Latin, African and jazz – into a universal groove. And in doing so, MAW has become a cultural mélange unto itself, emblematic of the multicultural society in which we live.” As producers, their backgrounds and influences as DJs are what make them an unstoppable force in the studio – Gonzalez's hip-hop roots allow him to create the beats and samples, while Vega's club background gives him the vision to create the grooves that rock the floors – while both draw heavily from their Latin roots with elements of salsa, jazz and other latino rhythms. Their flexibility and understanding of so many seemingly unrelated forms of music feed their notorious talent for blending sounds and flavors to create the freshest and most innovative mixes in house music. Joining them at MAW Electronic will be Todd Terry, the DJ that brought Vega and Gonzalez together back around 1990, as well as Jazzy Jeff, Josh Wink, Frankie Feliciano, DJ Deep – it doesn't get much better than this!!

Danny Tenaglia's Birthday Bonanza @ Club Envy

DJs/Performers: Danny Tenaglia, Tony Thomas, Demi, Chus & Ceballos, DJ Vibe

Location: Club Envy, 90 NE 11th St. , Downtown Miami
Time: ???
Contact: 305-373-2229

This is the second of two DT parties at Envy. From the man himself: “Why two days? Because Envy has a small capacity and one night will simply not be enough to do what my intentions are this year. Intention: To bring back the intimacy factor and bring back the fun in house music with reworkings of many classics and not feeling obligated to play BIG ROOM music or feel any form of pressure to always be "full on." I am just feeling the need for change in 2004. I have to follow my heart and instincts as I always do, and my intuition tells me this will be 2 great nights of Big Fun bringing it back to the Groove Jet style days of partying together "as one" with the music. The Old and the New. I can only describe Envy as....well, as Vinyl-ish as can be. There are not many 24 hour options in downtown Miami . And I actually like the Envy room. I think you all will too. However, I am warning everyone now, it will be packed and tight in there, so start planning your events and schedules now. Many people don't get in if they arrive at the peak hour as clubs get full to capacity very quickly down there. It doesn't matter who you are or who you know, if the place is jammed, the doorman cannot allow more people in until others leave. That's all I will say on that for now.” Why Danny, you usually have SO much more to say…..

Location: Mansion (formerly Level), 1235 Washington Ave

You'd figure with Godskitchen being one of the planet's biggest promotion companies, and with their recent acquisition of Spundae, the US's biggest promotion house, that they could put together a slightly better lineup for their WMC party – I mean, Armin Van Buren and Crystal Method are decent, but for $35? And with basically every global DJ at their fingertips? This is a poor, poor showing from Godskitchen, and hopefully not a sign of what's to come in their entrance into the stateside club scene.

Judge Jules, George Acosta, Darude – that's TRANCE-TASTIC! You can escape the cheddar with Collette and BBB, but $20 might even be a bit much for a lineup that belongs in 1999. Besides, your glowstix won't work during the day.

Get Some @ B.E.D.

Presented by: Made at Arc

DJs/Performers: 112 Crew - Bill Patrick, Dennis Rodgers, Matt Licata

Location: B.E.D., 929 Washington Ave
Time: 10pm - 5am
Price: FREE
Bill Patrick, Dennis Rodgers, Matt Licata and Tom Amoroso of New York's 112 Crew seem to be the stateside saviors of the club scene the last few years – the only true musical talent to cause a new buzz amongst DJs and punters alike. It seemed like Bill Patrick was everywhere in Miami last year – maybe it was the mohawk, maybe it was the incessant partying, or maybe it was that these guys are bringing something truly fresh to the table – their musical range is deep and varied – from chunky New York house, to German tech-house, to minimal dubbed-out tech, and even some bangin' techno for good measure – who else could spin the Tronic WMC party, as easily as rocking Circo Loco @ DC10 in Ibiza? These guys have been imbedded in the NY scene for more than five years – the former Twiloheadz now hold down Saturday nights at Arc, and are working gigs across the planet with fervor. 112 has been spreading their sound across the globe – Dennis Rodgers is the Mixture LA monthly resident; Patrick spun at the Cobalt anniversary late last year, and spent his first summer in Ibiza last year rocking the main floor at We Love Sundays at Space, as well as Circo Loco. Get Some in BED has the potential to be “that” party that the industry talks about for the next year.

The success of Lee Burridge's collaborations are a tribute to his musical versatility. ”Tommie Sunshine's Xylophone Jones Recordings presents an evening of all things sleazy.” Mr. Sunshine threw a karaoke party last year – novel idea, but hearing John Selway sing Margaritaville is not my idea of WMC fun. But who can really fade Tommie – a NYC transplant and Chicago favorite who also does double-time in Felix's Thee Glitz Crew, his electrotrashed events are always a trip. Lord knows what their live performance will entail…this freebie is definitely worth checking.

He has been a DJ for 20 years, at places like the Tunnel and his own seminal Ego Trip in NYC; and a producer and remixer whose work with Strictly Rhythm helped make the label the last word in US house and who personally is credited with giving NY house a rougher, edgier sound.” His Release Yourself Mondays at Pacha are always a can't miss in Ibiza , which is why he calls the White Isle home all summer. He rocks the biggest stages with a sense of intimacy that is unrivaled: “I burn incense. I light candles. I try to make the booth a little temple.
